December at the Senior Centers

Currituck Senior's ExercisingThe Currituck County Senior Centers; Barco, Knotts Island and Powell's Point are places designed to give Senior Adults in Currituck the opportunity to meet other seniors, receive services geared towards seniors and participate in activities that will affirm their dignity and self-worth.

With that in mind each month the staff produces a newsletter to inform citizens of available programs for that month. Please take the time to read what the Senior Centers are doing this month.

Cooking with Latesa...

                  Fennel Cake with Parmesan Cheese

Ingredients:

6 heads fennel, trimmed, quartered
Butter

Pepper
3 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese

Directions:

Cook fennel in salted water until it is tender. It is important to get this right: the fennel should not still be crisp, on the other hand it should not be floppy either.

Drain it well and arrange in a generously buttered gratin dish.

Be generous, too, with the pepper mill.

Sprinkle on the cheese.

Put into the oven at 400 degrees, until the cheese is golden brown and the fennel is bubbling vigorously in buttery juices.

Tammy's "Did You Know"...

Even though December brings the beauty of Christmas, it also brings cold weather.

For seniors this could be dangerous! Falls are one of the major causes of injuries for seniors. Make sure you wear non-skid shoes with a low heel during the winter months. Consider having a handrail installed if you do not currently have one. These help with balancing and slippery steps.

BUNDLE UP! Senior skin gets dryer in the winter months. So wear a coat, gloves, scarf and hat.

Please be careful this winter!
