November at the Senior Centers

Currituck Senior's ExercisingThe Currituck County Senior Centers; Barco, Knotts Island and Powell's Point are places designed to give Senior Adults in Currituck the opportunity to meet other seniors, receive services geared towards seniors and participate in activities that will affirm their dignity and self-worth.

With that in mind each month the staff produces a newsletter to inform citizens of available programs for that month. Please take the time to read what the Senior Centers are doing this month.

Medicare Open Enrollment

Shelia Gregory will be assisting with Medicare open enrollment on Wednesday, November 15, 2017 from 10a.m.-2p.m. by Appt. Only at the Senior Center in Barco.                   Call 252-232-3505

Eligibility Requirements for Medicare-You can enroll in Medicare if you meet at least one of the following...

You're 65 or older

You meet certain disability requirements

You receive benefits from the Social Security Administration (SSA) or the Railroad Retirement Board (RRB)

You have end-stage renal disease (ESRD) or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease)

Does the plan cover the services you need?

If you have other types of health or prescription drug coverage, make sure you understand how that coverage works with Medicare.

What does the plan cost?

Lower is not always better - consider things like the cost of premiums and deductibles, how much you pay for hospital stays and doctor visits and whether it's important for you to have expenses balanced throughout the year.

Are the plan's providers and rules convenient?

Your time is valuable. Where are the doctors' offices? What are their hours? Which pharmacies can you use? Can you get prescriptions by mail?

What plans perform the best?

Look for 5-star performance ratings

Cooking with Latesa...

                        "End of Summer Roasted Veggies"

I egg, lightly beaten
1/2 cup butter, melted and cooled
1 -2 layer size pkg. chocolate cake mix
1 -8 ounce package cream cheese, softened
2 eggs
1 -16 ounce package powdered sugar
1/2 cup butter, melted and cooled
1/4 cup chocolate fudge topping
2 tablespoons strong brewed coffee or espresso
1 teaspoon vanilla
powdered sugar

In a medium bowl, stir together 1 egg and 1/2 cup melted butter. Stir in dry cake mix until combined (you may need to work the mixture together by hand, as it will be thick.) Press evenly into the bottom of a greased 13x9x2 inch baking pan.

Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, in a large mixing bowl, beat cream cheese with an electric mixer until fluffy. Add 2 eggs, one at a time, beating on low speed after each addition just until combined. Gradually add 16 ounces powdered sugar, 1 cup at a time, beating on low speed until smooth. Slowly add 1/2 cup melted butter, the chocolate topping, coffee and vanilla, continuing to beat on low speed until just combined.

Pour batter over baked cake crust. Bake for 35 minutes more (center will not appear to be set.) Cool completely in pan on a wire rack before cutting into bars. If you like, sprinkle with additional powdered sugar. Cut into bars.
