Operation Santa Helps Hundreds Enjoy The Holidays
Social Services responds to the needs of many Currituck children

The Currituck County Department of Social Services (DSS) provided Christmas assistance to more than 600 local children in 2009. Through its Operation Santa Claus, DSS distributed gifts to 627 children in 328 families within Currituck County.

DSS Director Kathy Romm expressed her gratitude for the large number of donations received during the holidays, which allowed DSS to provide for more children than ever before.

"I've been doing this program since 1981 and I'm certain that's a record," said Romm, referring to high number of children and families seeking assistance.

Romm credits the DSS staff and citizens throughout the region for making Operation Santa a huge success. The department received a significant boost from local media which publicized the effort. A large number of donations were received after WTKR TV 3 allowed DSS staff members to stage an impromptu telethon on Dec. 11.

In addition to public donations, county staff pitched in by sponsoring 51 children. Staff members also made other donations to sponsor an additional 14 children during Operation Santa Claus.
