NCDOT To Kickoff Transportation Plan Update

Commissioners Present Special Honor To Local Resident
Long Leaf Pine Award Bestowed By Governor

The Board of Commissioners made a special presentation during its September 21 meeting, as Currituck resident Bob Koontz received The Order of the Long Leaf Pine.

The Long Leaf Pine is North Carolina's highest civilian honor, and is only granted by the Governor. Board of Commissioners Chairman Owen Etheridge presented the award to Koontz, who was joined at the meeting by his family. In addition to the Governor's commendation, a special letter of recognition was sent by N.C. Rep. Bill Owens and read aloud by Etheridge.

Koontz has spent many years working for the Babe Ruth youth baseball organization in Currituck. Etheridge described Koontz as "Mr. Babe Ruth baseball of northeastern North Carolina."

Recycling Reminder:  Oct. 1 Landfill Ban On Plastic Bottles
Residents Urged To Recycle A Wide Number Of Items

Recycle LogoA statewide ban on the disposal of plastic bottles into landfills will take effect on October 1, 2009. Currituck County accepts plastic bottles for recycling - along with many other items - at each of the county's eight Recycling Centers.

EMS Aquires Additional AEDs For Public Sites
Increased Number Of Kits Enhances Public Safety

AED deviceCurrituck County Emergency Medical Services recently obtained three Automatic External Defibrillators for placement in public locations. These devices provide immediate aid to citizens in cardiac arrest and are placed in many public buildings throughout Currituck.

The technology of each Medtronic LifePak 1000 is compatible with that found in each EMS ambulance. Staff members at each AED location are trained to properly use the device.

The new kits will be based in the Cooperative Extension Building, the new Moyock Library, and in the Fire Marshal's response vehicle. Other locations already housing an AED include all three branches of the Currituck Senior Center, Health Department, and Corolla Public Library.
