Along with localized flooding throughout many neighborhoods, Currituck County suffered a significant amount of dune erosion from the Nor'easter storm which struck the county on Nov. 11 - 13, 2009.
The photo below, taken on Nov. 16, reveals the destruction caused by the storm. In this image, unattached staircases stand idle on the beach. The steps were previously attached to walkways over dunes, which had extended out directly next to the staircases. Due to erosion caused by the storm, the dunes now sit much further back inland.

The 2nd Annual Currituck Holiday Festival will be held on Saturday, December 5, 2009 at the Cooperative Extension Center in Barco. Activities begin with a 9:00 a.m. Breakfast with Santa for kids of all ages.

The Board of Commissioners voted unanimously on Nov. 16 to extend a $200,000 contribution to Sentara Hospital to help fund a new helicopter for the medical facility. To reach the total donation, $100,000 will be alloted from each of the county's general fund and occupancy tax revenue fund.
Sentara Hospital's Nightingale Air Ambulance Service makes several flights each year into Currituck County to assist in medical emergencies for both residents and vacationers. The helicopter allows patients to be transported to medical facilities in a much speedier manner during critical incidents than afforded by ground transportation.
Sentara previously had requested a $1 million donation from Currituck County towards the purchase of a $7 million Eurocopter EC145 helicopter. |
Currituck County finalized an agreement on Nov. 2 with the Hampton Roads YMCA to operate a recreation center in a new county facility to be built in Barco. The recreation center will be the main component of the $12 million building, which is also expected to house a senior center and staff offices for the Parks and Recreation Department.
Construction of the building is scheduled to begin by December 2010, with an opening planned by the end of 2011. |
The Board of Commissioners will host a meeting with the Camden County Board of Commissioners on Monday, November 23, 2009 to discuss the Outlying Landing Field issue. This meeting will be held in the Cooperative Extension Center, beginning at 3:00 p.m.

A free Thanksgiving Dinner will be held on Thursday, Nov. 26, 2009 in Currituck County. This special event is hosted by the Etheridge Family & Friends Charity Friends of the Community and will be held at Currituck County High School at 1:00 p.m.
This dinner is intended for senior citizens, single parents and children and those less fortunate. For more information, call 435-2254.
