Region Currently Spared from Swine Flu Outbreak
Currituck County officials are communicating daily with regional and state health personnel to monitor reports of the H1N1 or "swine flu" outbreak. So far, the local region seems to have been spared any contact with the illness.
As of May 6, 2009, the state of North Carolina had seven confirmed cases of residents infected with the H1N1 flu. However, none of these cases are in the northeastern N.C. region and Albemarle Regional Health Services reports it has no suspected cases within its service area. More
Currituck Moves Upward in Recycling Ranking
Thanks to the county's increased commitment to improving facilities and residents' willingness to participate, Currituck's recycling program has moved into the top 20 of the state's ranking of counties based on recycling tonnage per capita.

In the latest information released by the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Currituck now ranks 19th of all 100 counties in North Carolina. This represents a marked improvement from a year ago, when Currituck ranked 27th. More

Whalehead Trust To Hold Annual Meeting, Tours
The Whalehead Preservation Trust will hold its 2009 Annual Meeting on Monday, May 11, 2009. The public is invited to this event, which will also include tours of the Whalehead Club and boathouse, and a reception.

Airport Advisory Board Calls Special Session
A special session of the Airport Advisory Board will be held on Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. This public meeting will take place in the Terminal Building at the Currituck Regional Airport.
Emergency Management to Host LEPC Meeting
Currituck County's Emergency Management staff will host a meeting of the Local Emergency Planning Committee on Thursday, May 14, 2009. This public meeting will be held in the Historic Courthouse at 7:00 p.m. For more information, contact the EM office at 232-2115.
BOC Schedules Corolla Town Hall Meeting
The Currituck Board of Commissioners will conduct a Town Hall Meeting in Corolla on Thursday, May 21, 2009. This meeting is open to the public, and will be held at the Corolla Fire Station in Whalehead, beginning at 7:00 p.m. For more information, call 232-2075.
Senior Health & Fitness Day On Tap
Currituck County senior citizens have a wonderful opportunity to receive health screenings, view educational exhibits, gather health and prescription drug information, and participate in movement activities with others during the 2009 Senior Health and Fitness Day.
This annual event will be held on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at the Cooperative Extension facility. The program will begin at 8:30 a.m. with health screenings provided by Albemarle Regional Health Services. Participants must pre-register for the event, as well as reserve lunch. More
In Focus: Albemarle Hospital Foundation Helps Many
Created in 2003, the Albemarle Hospital Foundation works to provide much-needed aid to residents of many counties, including Currituck. The Foundation's Community Care Clinics were developed to offer free primary care, prescriptions, and prescription assistance to local indigent and uninsured citizens.
Thousands of prescriptions have been filled through the
Community Care Clinics, and many residents have received free health care. The Foundation also supports activities of Albemarle Health, including Camp NoWeezin. Members of the Foundation's Board include Currituck Commissioners.

New State Law Affects Irrigation Systems
A new law takes affect on July 1, 2009 that will require separate water meters for in-ground irrigation systems. County residents who may be affected by House Bill 2499, titled "An act to improve drought preparedness and response in North Carolina", should gather more information on this measure. More
4-H Accepting Summer Day Camp Registration
Parents may register children for summer day camps hosted by Currituck County 4-H. Camp Cloverbud is open to children ages 5 to 8, while the 4-H/SOS camps include children ages 9 to 13.
Both camps will operate on a schedule of Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. daily. Camps are held in various locations throughout the county and are available in June, July, and August. Children may also register for the Northeast District 4-H Science Camp, which will be held at N.C. Wesleyan College on June 14 - 16. This camp is for rising 5th - 8th graders.

Summer Soccer Camp Will Be Held in Moyock
Currituck Parks & Rec will host a summer soccer camp during the week of July 20 - 24, at Moyock Elementary School. The Challenger British Soccer Camp is open to children ages 3-16.
