EM Staff Shares Weather Safety Tips
with JES Students

hands-on assembly with the Currituck Emergency Management staff.

It's "Severe Weather Awareness
Week" in NC
Did you know that North Carolina ranked
4th nationally among states for the highest number of severe weather
reports in 2008?
March 1-7, 2009 is Severe Weather Awareness Week in the
state, and Emergency Management officials advise everyone to prepare
now. Each family should have a safety plan for all types of severe
weather, including tornadoes and hurricanes. Residents should also
gather items for a family emergency supply kit. More
Currituck Team Pursues Green Grant
A project team that includes Currituck
County government and Currituck County schools is a finalist for a 2009
Board of Science & Technology Green Business Grant Fund Award
cycle.
Within its proposal, the Currituck team submitted a
plan to erect a wind turbine at Jarvisburg Elementary School. More

Discusses "Public Matters" On the Air
Currituck County representatives are participating
in a weekly radio segment - titled "Public Matters" - to
discuss current topics of interest and community resources. Each week's
conversation airs Sunday at 7:30 a.m., on 92.1 WCDG.
WCDG offers a wide audience throughout Currituck and
across the Hampton Roads area of Virginia.The intent of this segment is
to provide information about Currituck County and discuss issues
affecting its residents, as well as resources and services available.

All in a Day's Work
Eric Brinkley (red suit) and Brandon
Whitlow (black suit) took part in a recent dive. Brinkley works in
the Currituck Sheriff's Office and Whitlow is a volunteer at the
Crawford Volunteer Fire Department. Both men are members of Crawford's
dive team.

County residents traveling for business or
pleasure across North Carolina have an On Demand Air Taxi Service
available at the Currituck Regional Airport. Currituck is a participant
in the NCFlyports network of 11 community airports throughout the
state. This on-demand type of service is designed to make air travel
more efficient for state travelers. More
Tax Help Available at Currituck Senior
Center
The Currituck Senior Center is offering
senior citizens free assistance with completing tax return forms. This
service is available on Thursdays, at the Currituck Senior Center.
Participants must make an appointment by calling 232-3505.
The Currituck Library has blank federal and state
tax return forms available. The library also has free public use
computers available for residents who would like to file their
returns online, but do not have a computer at home. Call the
library for more information at 453-8345.
Senior Center Offers Healthy Nutrition
Program
Elderly residents can take advantage of the Senior
Nutrition Program and enjoy a healthy lunch at any of the three senior
centers in Currituck County. Lunch is served daily at 12:00 noon,
Monday through Friday. Participants must be at least 60 years of age,
and call by 11:30 a.m. the day before to order lunch. Currituck Senior
Center: 232-3505; Knotts Island: 429-3231; and
Powells Point: 491-8173.
2009 Craft Workshop Registration Now
Open
The Currituck Center for Cooperative
Extension is now accepting registration for the 2009 Northeastern North
Carolina Craft Workshop. Registration will be taken on a "first
come, first served" basis until the April 1 deadline.
The 2009 Craft Workshop will be held on May 12 - 13,
at the James Research Center in Plymouth. A registration fee of $7.50
per day will be required.

received from the Currituck Cooperative Extension office. Call 232-2261
