"In running, it doesn't matter whether you come in first, in the middle of the pack, or last. You can say, 'I have finished.' There is a lot of satisfaction in that."

County Budget Available for Public Review
Citizens may review the FY 2009 - 2010 County Budget prior to a Board of Commissioners public hearing scheduled for June 15, 2009. The new budget must be approved by the end of June and takes effect on July 1, 2009.

One highlight included within the budget proposal is the property tax rate for Currituck County, which will remain at the current level of $0.32. In the present fiscal year, this ranks Currituck as the 7th lowest property tax rate among North Carolina's 100 counties.

Anyone wishing to review the budget may do so online here. A printed version is available in the County Manager's office at the Historic Courthouse. Call 232-2075 for more information.

July 4 Celebration to Feature Rising Country Music Star

Citizens should be aware that July 4 falls on a Saturday and plan accordingly, as this is a "changeover" day for most rental homes. Those attending the Celebration should be aware that traffic on NC 12 could be heavier than normal due to the high number of tourists leaving and entering the Currituck Outer Banks. For more information, contact the Tourism Department at 453-9612.

Hurricane Season is Here - Be Prepared!
Though Currituck County has not faced a major hurricane in a number of years, residents should always be prepared. Hurricane season officially began on June 1, 2009 and Currituck Emergency Management encourages all citizens to update emergency safety kits and family plans.

Local information on pre-storm planning, protecting property, and evacuations can be found online here. Currituck County also maintains an Evacuation Assistance Registry, for citizens who may need special help during an evacuation due to age or medical conditions. Please contact Social Services at 232-3083 for Registry information.

Another excellent source of useful information can be found online at the state's ReadyNC.org site. This includes a wide variety of information, such as checklists for safety kits.
