OLF Legislation Sweeps Through N.C. House & Senate
A bill that may help Currituck County avoid selection as the site of a future Navy Outlying Landing Field (OLF) was passed unanimously by the Senate on April 22, 2009. N.C. Senators approved the legislation by a vote of 49 - 0.
House Bill 613, which was introduced by Rep. Bill Owens, previously was unanimously passed by the House of Representatives on April 16 with a 113 - 0 vote. The bill's language focuses on the jurisdiction over any property in North Carolina acquired by the Navy for the purpose of constructing an OLF.

"Dream Team" Targets Maple Park
A group of Currituck County High School students plans to promote education on the dangers of tobacco use while helping maintain the attractiveness of Maple Park.
The CCHS "Dream Team", an organization of high-performing students, has already begun by picking up cigarette butts from the park's grounds. Maple Park, which is located on Airport Rd., includes a skate park, playground, ball fields, picnic pavilion, walking trails and horse trails.
Future plans of the students include planting flowers, placing a bench at the park, and painting an anti-tobacco themed mural. The group received approval for its ideas from the Board of Commissioners on April 20.
Tourism Duo Completes Marketing College
Two members of Currituck's Travel and Tourism Department recently completed a three-year program offered by the Southeast Tourism Society Marketing College.
Tourism Director Diane Nordstrom and Marketing Coordinator Veronica Brown each earned certification as a "Travel Marketing Professional." They were among 57 tourism professionals to graduate from the program. More

Home, Flower & Garden Show This Weekend!
The Cooperative Extension will host the 2009 Home, Flower & Garden Show on April 24 - 25. Make plans to attend the show, which is celebrating the theme of "Go Green for a Better Tomorrow."
Featured at this year's show will be garden designs, plants, herbs and vegetables for sale, vendors with a variety of garden and household items, and children's activities. The featured guest speaker will be Lena Gallitano, from Raleigh, who will present information on birding trails. More
'Currituck Day' Coming to Museum of the Albemarle
Currituck County will be the subject of a special celebration at the Museum of the Albemarle on Sunday, May 17.
"Currituck Day" will be held from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. at the museum, which is located in Elizabeth City. Activities will include a special carving demonstration, display of county artifacts and scavenger hunt. For additional information, contact the museum at 335-1453.
4-H Accepting Summer Day Camp Registration
Parents may register children for summer day camps hosted by Currituck County 4-H. Camp Cloverbud is open to children ages 5 to 8, while the 4-H/SOS camps include children ages 9 to 13.
Both camps will operate on a schedule of Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. daily. Camps are held in various locations throughout the county and are available in June, July, and August. Children may also register for the Northeast District 4-H Science Camp, which will be held at N.C. Wesleyan College on June 14 - 16. This camp is for rising 5th - 8th graders.

Summer Soccer Camp Will Be Held in Moyock
Currituck Parks & Rec will host a summer soccer camp during the week of July 20 - 24, at Moyock Elementary School. The Challenger British Soccer Camp is open to children ages 3 to 16.

Parks & Rec Offering Beginners Yoga Class
Registration is now open for a Beginners Yoga Class offered by Currituck Parks & Recreation. All county residents ages 16 and older may participate in the class, which will begin on May 5.
The class will contain eight sessions, which will be held at the Cooperative Extension facility on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 5:45 - 6:30 p.m. A $25.00 registration fee is required of each participant. For information, call 232-3007.
Play Ball! Youth Baseball and Softball Starting in May
The Youth Baseball and Softball seasons organized by Currituck Parks & Recreation will begin play on Saturday, May 2. Children ages 5 to 16 are eligible to participate.

Senior Center Helps Bank be More "Senior Friendly"
The Currituck Senior Center joined the Bank of Currituck in early April to announce a number of senior friendly initiatives now offered by the bank. These include new desk lamps with magnification capability to ease the process of completing transaction documents. More
