Hurricane Center - Irene

Currituck County has qualified for FEMA disaster aid for individuals and businesses. How to Apply 

The FEMA Disaster Recovery Center will close for good on Saturday, October 1 at 7:00 pm.


After Storm Assistance

Unemployment benefits for those who lost work due to Irene can be applied for at 866-795-8877. The deadline to apply is October 5.

Legal Assistance for those who can't afford a lawyer can be found at 800-662-7407.
 

Disaster Relief

  • The Currituck County Board of Commissioners has waived building permit fees for repairs and reconstruction related to Hurricane Irene storm damage.

    The deadline to apply for these permits is October 28, 2011.

  • Currituck County is coordinating volunteers to help others in the community with storm cleanup and recovery. If you would like to volunteer, or if you need help and would like to see if help could be arranged, contact the Peter Bishop, Volunteer Coordinator at 252-232-2075.

  • Gov. Bev Perdue announced that citizens wishing to offer monetary relief for survivors of Hurricane Irene may send their donations to the N.C. Disaster Relief Fund.

    The fund is set up through the N.C. Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service, housed in the Office of the Governor. All donations are tax-deductible. Checks may be mailed to: N.C. Disaster Relief Fund, 20312 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC, 27612. Credit card donations may be made at: www.ncdisasterrelief.org.

  • There are sources of assistance for families dealing with costly storm damage to their homes.

    N.C.  Cooperative Extension has put  together an informative new release to let you know where to look for help and know your rights should you find yourself faced with home foreclosure in the aftermath of the storm.

  • Residents should guard against contractor fraud as they begin home repairs.

  • Mold can cause health problems, so people who live in homes that were flooded during Hurricane Irene should act quickly and carefully to prevent or remove mold.

    North Carolina Cooperative Extension recommends that homeowners follow four steps:
    • Start by removing contaminated mud and debris,
    • then clean,
    • disinfect
    • and dry the home.

Debris Removal
  • Recycle Center and Transfer Station Locations

  • Items Accepted At Recycle Center

  • NCDOT to begin picking up vegetative debris (limbs, etc) on state-maintained roads if FEMA determines that Currituck qualifies for public assistance.

    Place piles near road in DOT right-of-way. Please do not block utility poles, water meters or fire hydrants.

  • Property owners who do not live on state maintained roads will need to take their debris to a county convenience center

    Vegetative debris amount of more than a small pickup truck load should be taken to the Transfer Station in Maple, not Recycling Centers.

  • The Transfer Station at 216 Airport Road in Maple has a staging area for White Goods.

    Hours of operation are from 8:00 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Monday - Saturday.

  • Vegetative Debris (yard waste) must be separated from Storm Debris before taking it to the Transfer Station.

    Yard Waste is not allowed in the landfill.
