Q. Where can I get a Drivers License in Currituck County?
The Department of Motor Vehicles Mobile Unit which visits Currituck County once a month is changing its schedule. Beginning with March 6, 2008 the DMV Mobile Unit will come to Currituck on the Thursday of the first full week of each month.
This Mobile Unit will still be located in the Historic Courthouse parking lot. The unit is scheduled to visit Currituck on the following dates in 2008: October 9, November 6, and December 4.

Q. What garbage and trash collection services does the County provide its citizens?
Currituck County has eight Manned Convenience Centers for residential solid waste collection and recycling. Commercial, industrial, and other solid waste in quantities too large for the Manned Convenience Centers must be taken to the Currituck Transfer Station located at 216 Airport Road, Maple. On the Currituck Outer Banks, curbside trash and recycling pickup is available from Pine Island to the end of the paved road in Corolla. This service is provided via a contract with Waste Management. To sign up for new service in this area, call Waste Management at 1-800-877-7531. Summer service schedule (May 1 - Sept. 30): Trash - Wednesday & Saturday; Recycling - Saturday. Winter service schedule (Oct. 1 - April 30): Trash & Recycling - Wednesday. For customer service or questions, call Waste Management at 1-800-877-7531.
Q. How do I obtain a business license?
Currituck County does not require business or privilege licenses; however, the County does require that businesses comply with State license requirements. Questions regarding locating a business in Currituck County should be directed to Peter Bishop, Economic Development Director, at 252-232-2075, ext. 6015.
Q. Where can I get an ATV Permit to ride my four-wheeler on the northern Currituck Outer Banks beaches?
Applications may be obtained at the County Manager's Office in Currituck or the Outer Banks Satellite Office in Corolla. You must be a Currituck County resident or property owner to be eligible to obtain two free annual permits and show proof of liability insurance on the ATV. You may also obtain an ATV Permit Application by calling 252-232-2075, ext. 4002. Typically, if applying in person, permits are issued at the time the completed application and proof of insurance are presented. Permits may also be obtained by mail by faxing or mailing the application and proof of insurance to the County Manager's Office, P.O. Box 39, Currituck, NC 27929, Fax: 252-232-3551. Q. How can I contact the Board of Commissioners?
The Board of Commissioners meets on the first and third Mondays of each month at 7:00 p.m., unless the meeting schedule is changed due to holidays or other reasons. The meetings are typically held in the Board Meeting Room, located on the second floor of the Historic Currituck Courthouse, 153 Courthouse Rd., Currituck. Regular Board meetings are open to the public.

Q: When are vehicle taxes due?
Motor vehicles taxes become due the 4th month after the vehicle has received a new registration or renewed its registration with DMV. Vehicle taxes must be paid in 30 days to avoid interest or penalties. The Tax Department will block the vehicle's registration with DMV if the taxes are not paid promptly. DMV will not send registration renewal cards to the owner of any vehicle that has a registration block. Registrations blocked for non-payment of taxes cannot be renewed until the taxes are paid.

Real Estate and Personal Property Taxes are due September 1st.

Q. How can I change my address on Motor Vehicle records?
In accordance with state law, you must notify the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) with your change of address. The Tax Department utilizes DMV records to determine which taxing district you are in and where to mail your tax bill. The wrong address on their records could result in your paying too much tax and in not receiving your license plate renewal card & decals on time. Q. When are building permits required?
Building permits are required for the following residential construction:
- Single Family Dwellings (Site built homes)
- Modulars (On frame/Off frame) & Manufactured Homes
- Additions (Attached garages, porches, utility rooms, decks, carports, etc)
- Detached Accessory Structures (Garages, carports, sheds, gazebos, above/in-ground pools, hot tubs, wooden pool/hot tub decking, etc)
- Bulkheads, piers, platforms, & beach access ways
- Chimney/Woodstove
- Roofing (Not required for shingle/covering replacement only)
- Improvements/Alterations in excess of $5,000 and/or any work classified as structural or load bearing
- Any work involving electrical, plumbing, mechanical, insulation or gas piping work
- Demolition permits are required to take down/demolish structures
- Moving permits are required to relocate structures on the same property, or to move structures from one parcel to another
Building permits are also required for all commercial projects, including new construction, additions, alterations, accessory structures, signs, change of occupancy, etc. Please contact the Building Permit offices listed below for information and/or requirements pertaining to these projects.

Building permits are not required for the following; however, zoning permits and/or zoning requirements may apply: Residential storage and accessory buildings, 144 square foot or less, with no dimension greater than twelve (12) feet, including height, and that may not be used as living space (per section 1803 of the Unified Development Ordinance); fences, concrete patios or walkways. CAMA permits may also apply, if the proposed project is located on or near the ocean, sound, river, canal, or other navigable waterways. Contact the Planning Department and/or the Local CAMA officer for information and requirements for these types of permits.
Q. How and where can I register to vote?
You must complete a voter registration application. If mailing in your application, please note there is an identification requirement. You can obtain voter registration forms at the following locations:
- Board of Elections office
- Public Library
- local high school
- Currituck Chamber of Commerce office
Forms should be completed and mailed or delivered to the Board of Elections office.
You may register at the Department of Motor Vehicles office when conducting official DMV business, or at any state agency when applying for or receiving benefits.
After your application is processed you will receive a voter card which provides your information and polling place.
