Register of Deeds
The Register of Deeds is elected by the people and serves a four-year term. This office records, indexes, and stores all real estate and business related documents that are presented for registration. This includes issuing marriage licenses and certified copies of birth and death records.
The Register of Deeds office is open Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., except on County holidays. In addition, when the office is open, the public may search the public records from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
What This Department Does
- Files, indexes, and records deeds, mortgages and miscellaneous property-related records and plats in a variety of formats
- Provides copies of deeds and plats for a fee
- Offers on-site information and instructions on how to search for records
- Provides certified true copies of any documents on record in the Register of Deeds office
What This Department Does Not Do
- Perform title searches or searches for other information
- Advise, refer, or make legal recommendations
Common Terms
Deed – A signed and usually sealed instrument containing some legal transfer, bargain, or contract.
Conveyance – The transfer of title to real property from one person to another.
Plat – A scale-sized drawing of parcels or lots of land. Created by a survey, a plat defines a property’s size and boundaries.
Title Search – A comprehensive research process which analyzes property status information, including ownership, liens, deeds, mortgages, and history.
